Appendix

4Sight refers to Wikipedia to define key psychological concepts helpful in supporting the 4Sight theories on the origins of human behavior. The exact validity and accuracy of Wikipedia can be debated. However, the general themes of the information presented is enough for substantiation of the four principles that comprise the 4Sight Concept.

WHEN THINGS GO WELL DURING DEVELOPMENT

  1. Infant's must attach to adults to learn how to behave
  2. Attachment occurs from birth to around age three
  3. The difference between the attachment environment and the youth and adult environments is on a spectrum from completely similar to completely dissimilar.

  1. Marks the end of the attachment process
  2. Marks the beginning of the adapation and synchronization process (melding the developmental environment with the youth and adult environments)
  3. Will be incomplete if splitting or developmental trauma are present

ISSUES THAT CAN OCCUR WHICH ARE ROOTED IN DEVELOPMENT
To some extent all people exhibit some of these side-effects from incomplete or damaged development. However, if an individual demonstrates these patterns - which will cause conflict in their lives - on a regular or severe basis, mental health issues will arise.

  1. Splitting is a negative side-effect of problems during attachment
  2. Splitting is the inabilty to combine negative and positive traits in others, leading to black and white feelings

  1. Triggers occurs when a developmental perception is activated by a current event
  2. The more severe the response the less likely rational discussion becomes

  1. Individuals create Cognitive Distortions to maintain the developmental perception instead of adapting to the reality of the youth and adult environments

  1. Maladaptive behavior is a ineffective and/or non-productive response to an event

  1. Developmental Trauma is prolonged trauma occuring during childhood development
  2. Developmental Trauma causes severe emotional regulation as the person acts in survival mode

  1. A maladaptive strategy whereby an individual transfers and even enables behavior in someone else that they find unacceptable
  2. Projective identification prevents a person from taking responsibility for their behavior
  3. This strategy often occurs when a person is triggered and having overwhelming feelings, often anger and rage, related to a current event.

STANDARD APPROACHES TO THERAPY

Cognitive Therapy and the thoughts-feelings-behavior connection

  1. individuals can move toward overcoming difficulties and meeting their goals by identifying and changing unhelpful or inaccurate thinking, problematic behavior, and distressing emotional responses

  1. DBT is a specific type of CBT that emphasizes teaching skills to better manage difficult feelings situations and relationships.
  2. Many of the tools taught in DBT help address cognitive distortions that occur in triggering situations.
  3.
