Catch 22
The worst part about self-esteem issues and self-confidence issues is that they prevent their own improvement.
A person with self-esteem issues doesn't like to look at their past.
It makes them feel bad, usually from guilt or shame.
A person with self-confidence issues doesn't like to look at their future.
It makes them feel bad, usually from fear or worry.
In both cases, the primary maladaptive strategy is to avoid the thoughts.
The defense mechanisms are many, and they're all about denying or justifying the avoidance.
Unfortunately, that avoidance not only maintains the problem, it makes it worse.
In other words, if you want to improve your behavior, it has to start with your confronting some pretty negative feelings.
There is no other way.
